Cold winter days bring inspirations of new, warm drinks to cozy up to and relax. We have usual go-to’s like coffee, hot chocolate, tea to name a few but I wanted something new and healthy! I decided to try something different I happened to see in a coffee shop here where I live. A turmeric latte!
I have heard of turmeric and used it when listed in a recipe and have tried those healthy shots of turmeric and wheat grass they have at many health food stores. I even make the shots at home from time to time but the juice from this root is a little tough to get out. I had never tried a hot comforting drink made with turmeric though! The turmeric latte at the coffee shop was so good I decided to make a few versions of my own!
The health benefits of turmeric are growing with its anti-inflammatory properties being top on the list. It is thought to slow down the inflammatory and oxidative processes within our bodies. It has also been shown to have dramatic effects on several metabolic diseases and age-related degenerative disorders in the body. Four Easy Turmeric Lattes
Classic Turmeric Latte
- 2 c. almond milk
- 1 t. turmeric powder
- 1/2 t. ground cinnamon
- a drop of Stevia if you need a bit of sweetnes.
Pour the milk into a saucepan and cook over high heat until it’s hot, but don’t bring it to a boil or it could burn. Remove from the heat and add the rest of the ingredients. Stir. Put it in a small blender to froth it up. Enjoy.
Golden coconut latte
- 1 15oz. can coconut milk
- 1 c. banilla almond milk
- 1/2 t. vanilla extract
- 1/2- 1T. maple syrup or honey based on what you like best
- 1 t. turmeric
- 1/4 t. cinnamon
- Pinch of nutmeg
- Pinch of Cardamom
In a small pot, add coconut milk, almond milk, vanilla, honey, turmeric, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom. Whisk together and bring ingredients to a boil then reduce heat to low and simmer for 3-5 minutes to reduce the mixture a bit. Make sure to stir constantly. Pour into your fav cup and enjoy!
Spicey Spicey Latte!
- 3cm peeled turmeric root, or 3/4 t. turmeric powder
- 2cm piece of peeled ginger, or 1/2 t. ground ginger
- pinch of pepper
- I large T. honey
- 1 T. almond butter
- 1 1/2 c. almond or coconut milk
- 3/4 t. cinnamon
- 1 t. vanilla extract
- pinch of salt
Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth and frothy. Warm up in a small pot and pour into mugs. Sprinkle a bit of cinnamon on top. I also like a dash, or two, of cayenne! I put a couple star anise in too for decoration and I like the licorice flavor.
It’s a date latte
- 1/2 c. coconut milk
- 1 T. date sugar
- 4 t. freshly grated turmeric, or 1 t. ground turmeric
- 1/4 t. ginger
- 1/8 t. Chinese five-spice powder
- pinch of pink Himalayan salt
- 3/4 c. water
Whisk coconut milk, date sugar, turmeric, ginger, five-spice, salt, and water in a saucepan, bring to a boil. Remove from heat and let mixture steep 5 minutes then strain into a mug and drink up!
